There is a verse in the Bible that shows itself to be true every day. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh. Every once in a while, the truth really does come to light. No matter how well some people try to hide the truth, or the way they really feel, their heart overwhelms their brains and they just blurt it out. Every human being on the planet has been guilty of this, at one time or another. Sometimes, you just have to say what you really mean, what you really feel in your heart and President Barack Obama is no exception.
This small slip of the President’s tongue came a couple of days ago, while he was trotting through Sweden, on his way to Russia and the G20 Summit. In spite of all of his rhetoric about Syria and about consulting Congress, he told us how he really feels, from the bottom of his heart.
BizPac Review – This congressional consultation thing about a possible strike on Syria is strictly for the folks back home, he said.
“As commander in chief, I always preserve the right and the responsibility to act on behalf of America’s national security. I do not believe that I was required to take this to Congress,” Obama said, maybe thinking he was talking to a bunch of star-struck 22-year-olds who have nothing to worry about but staying on their parents’ health insurance for another four years.
Then he caught himself.
“But I did not take this to Congress just because it’s an empty exercise; I think it’s important to have Congress’s support on it,” Obama said.
Why it was real important wasn’t real clear, since he just plowed on with how all Congress does is carp, anyway. Basically, he made the whole thing sound like an empty exercise.
“It’s important for us to get out of the habit of just saying ‘well, we’ll let the president kind of stretch the boundaries of his authority as far as he can,’” Obama said.
“Congress will sit on the sidelines, snipe. If it works, the sniping will be a little less. If it doesn’t, a little more. But either way, the American people and their representatives are not fully invested in what are tough choices,” Obama said.
For the record, I take offense to the Obama’s words and his inflection. That doesn’t mean I am surprised by what he said. Whenever he speaks to the nation, Obama is apt to talk down to us, as if we were his children. He is prone to going before a captive audience and embarking on a speech to show everyone the error of their ways. Remember the State of the Union address where he openly criticized the Supreme Court justices sitting in the audience?
To put it bluntly, Obama’s attitude, towards the American people and our form of government, stinks. That’s the most polite way I can think of to describe it. How much more condescending does Obama have to get before we realize exactly how little he thinks of the people he was elected to lead? I can’t help but wonder what he thinks about people like you and I that he never says in public.
Not invested in tough choices? What tough choices does Obama mean? Is our desire to stay clear of the Syrian civil war indicative of a people who doesn’t know what it means to make tough choices? Or could it be, just maybe, that we do not wish to see our military embroiled into another war that has no good ending, no way of escape? I would contend, Mr. President, that more than a few of us know much more about making tough choices than you give us credit for.
Clearly, President Obama has made up his mind. If not, he is certainly acting the part. He is likely to win support in the Senate for his military action against Syria. The House of Representatives may be another story. He has an uphill battle in the House, even given the fact that John Boehner and Eric Cantor are in bed with Nancy Pelosi on this. Not that any of that makes a difference. I believe Obama will be airmailing a few special delivery packages into Syria in the near future. Never mind how Congress votes or what the majority of the American people say. After all, we are just sitting on the sidelines, sniping away at the tough choices we obviously know nothing about.
